The Beach Boys
Previous Names: The Pendletones
Early member Dennis Wilson was the only avid surfer in the group, but he suggested they sing about surfing culture popular in southern California at the time. Their first single, "Surfin' Safari" was recorded while they still called themselves The Pendletones. But the label Candix wanted their name to reflect surf culture directly, so changed their name to "The Beach Boys" without consulting them. The band wouldn't learn of their new name until unpacking the newly pressed singles.
