According to Brian Ritchie in a 2001 interview: "Jerry Fortier asked me what my brother was like. At the time my brother was working for an insurance company, totally straight. So of course I lied and said, 'He's exactly like me, he's a punk and he has his own band!' Jerry asked me what the name of the band was, which put me on the spot. I had to come up with something, so I blurted out, 'Uh....Violent Femmes.' I then walked over to Victor's house and told him about this episode. We had a good laugh and decided to start using the name."
