Steve Averill, a friend of Adam Claytons and local punk rock musician mentored the band on finding a good name. He suggested several, and the band chose U2 - thinking it was appropriately "vague" and "open to interpretation".
Later, founding member Paul Hewson saw a sign advertising "Bono Vox hearing aids" and discovered "Bono Vox" means "beautiful voice" in Latin. He decided to change his name to Bono.
