Lead vocalist Natalie Merchant is a big art-house movie fan (as were her bandmates), and derived their name from Herschell Gordon Lewis' 1964 B-movie "Two Thousand Maniacs!"
According to their bassist Steven Gustafson, "None of us saw the movie, and we thought the title was ’10,000 Maniacs’"
